Director of Business Development

Position Summary

David Aplin Group, one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, has partnered with our client to recruit for a Director of Business Development, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Are you looking for a challenging yet rewarding opportunity where your efforts make a difference to the sustainability and profitability in agriculture and other sectors with the end result being improved quality of life?  Reporting to the President, the successful candidate in this position will be responsible for planning, developing and implementing business development objectives, programs and budgets in collaboration with the executive leadership team.

The Role:


  • Conducting competitive analysis and collecting intel to further the business practices of the target organizations’ service offerings according to their lifecycle within untapped influential referral circles
  • Building on existing revenue streams through new offerings or value add programs
  • Work with the team to gather intelligence, strengthen relationships and identify other potential opportunities
  • Map target clients by business needs, industry specialization and lifecycle to understand potential opportunities
  • Responsible for cultivating and nurturing strategies to build clients planning, developing, and implementing business development objectives, programs, and budgets
  • Establish, develop, strengthen and maintain relationships with people at all levels in the market place, specifically identified targets, clients and their centers of influence
  • Proactively work ‘in the field’ to assist in business development activities, supporting the preparation of proposals and assisting to deliver client presentations
  • Collaborate with other departments and lines of business to drive growth and sell solutions as opposed to a product
  • Lead generation and the development of new relationships with business executives
  • Leveraging and exploring referral opportunities with clients and strategic partners
  • Engage the target client by introducing relevant subject matter experts when required

The Ideal Candidate:


  • A seasoned business development professional with a minimum of 10 years of experience
  • Proven ability to manage complexity and change while looking ahead of industry life cycles
  • Strategic and self-disciplined
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills
  • Definite hunter with great competency to follow-up and close the deal
  • Strong collaboration skills and high-stress tolerance
  • MUST be available to travel approximately 60% of the time including international travel
  • A genuine interest in uncovering pain points, finding solutions and making a real difference for the clients
  • An engineering background would benefit this individual but not a necessity for a true business development professional
  • Experience working with all levels of government would be an asset
